Eye applications

Dextran is used in eye drops and other ophthalmic solutions thanks to its lubricating nature and its ability to add stability and viscosity to formulations.

Dextran in ophthalmic solutions

Dextran is typically the active ingredient in eye drops due to its lubricating properties and ability to relieve dry, irritated eyes. The dextrans used in eye drops are typically high molecular weight carbohydrates, which form a protective film over the surface of the eye, known as the tear film, that helps to retain moisture and prevent excessive evaporation.

Dextran can also be used in eye drops containing medication, particularly as a way to improve the stability and viscosity of the formulation. As they can enhance the retention time of the eye drop on the ocular surface, they enable prolonged contact and better absorption of active ingredients, if present. This can be particularly beneficial for therapeutic agents that require sustained release or prolonged action.
