Gel permeation chromatography

Often used to measure the molecular weight of various samples in research, dextran can also be used as a matrix or support material in chromatography columns.

Dextran in gel permeation chromatography

Dextran molecules of different sizes can be used as standards in gel electrophoresis or chromatography techniques to determine the molecular weight of unknown samples. By comparing the migration of the unknown sample with the migration of dextran standards, researchers can estimate sample’s size.

Dextran can also be used as a matrix or support material in chromatography columns. By cross-linking it to form a gel-like structure, dextran creates a porous matrix that allows for the separation and purification of biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids. The pore size of the dextran gel can be adjusted to selectively retain molecules based on their size or charge, enabling researchers to isolate specific components from complex mixtures.
